for the Annual Parish Assembly, Thursday 19th April 2007

I am sorry not to be with you all this evening but I am escorting the Mayor of Gravesham to Germany on a Civic Visit.

I have compiled a brief resume of village events over the past year.

The new Rural Housing initiative in School Lane is now progressing after initial difficulties. It will provide 7 houses and 2 flats for our young families in the village.

I have asked for more signs on the Wainscott By Pass to try to stop HGV lorries coming through the village.

There will be a new “Transco” gas pipeline constructed from the Isle of Grain to Shorne and down to Shorne Fort. I have asked for signs to be erected at each entrance to the village to prohibit Transco lorries from using our roads. A map of the route of the pipeline will be available for you to look at during the interval.

Gravesham Borough Council has been awarded a “Safe Car Parks Award”, the Towncentric Information Centre has been awarded a “Silver Award” and is in competition with Wakefield for the “Gold Award”.

A £100 million contract for the Heritage Quarter of the Town Centre has just been signed and will include underground parking, very many flats, a market square and a hotel.

The appeal for the Chalk Road site will take place at the Civic Centre on July 31st . Interested residents may attend.

Gravesham Council Tax will rise by 4.89% from April.

The Borough Council has spent £125,000 replacing roofs on the houses in Higham .

The Civic Centre has been refurbished but there are ongoing costs. The new foyer includes a café, disabled access and computer facilities.

Our waste and recycling figures have now risen to 24% and all waste goes to the new “Waste to Energy” plant at Allington. I visited this facility last week and it is very impressive, providing electricity to Maidstone via the National Grid.

If you haven't yet applied for your postal vote in the May 3rd Election, please do so immediately.

You will all have seen that School Lane has been resurfaced and also the pavements near the shops and Gardeners corner. I am trying to get the rear of the shops resurfaced, but there appears to be some dispute over the ownership of the ground. It has taken me 2 years to get School Lane done and so I would ask you to be patient!
